Costa Coffee reveals what appears to be the first Coffee shop in the UK to be solar powered.
The building will be able to generate all of its energy requirements for building temperature control through the curved roof which has solar PV installation. The building is assembled with the uses of a special timber frame, super-insulted facade, underfloor heating system, embedded solar PV cells, and is positioned to accomplish maximum levels of sun and shade.
Supplied by EH Smith, 100 270W Suntech modules was used for the rooftop installation. The company acknowledged that the aesthetics of the panels was important to their client.
Andy Oram of EH Smith commented: “The aesthetics of the panels were also a consideration, so the all black looked better for the client than the traditional blue panel with silver frame.”
Managing director of Costa UK, Jim Slater added: “This is an exciting first for coffee shop and retail design here in the UK and has the potential to transform not just how we build new stores at Costa but the industry far more widely”.
By being the first Coffee shop in the UK to be solar powered, Costa Coffee has shown their intentions of using clean energy. With greater sustainability, Costa prepares to build more solar powered shops in the UK in the future. With Costa leading by example, the UK may possibly see more shops doing the same thing.
