Extreme Winter Weather is Here to Stay!

Extreme Winter Weather is Here to Stay!

With the ‘Beast From The East’ finally out of the way (we hope) we were interested to read that this sort of extreme winter weather may be here to stay!

This severe weather has hit parts of the US and the UK more frequently as of late and is becoming more common as the Arctic warms with scientists finding a strong link between high temperatures near the pole and unusually heavy snowfall and freezing weather further south.

Extreme cold winter weather is up to four times more likely when temperatures in the Arctic are unusually high a recent study found. In just the last couple of months alone, two large winter storms have swept across the US east coast in less than a week offloading up to three inches of snow per hour with the cold snap even reaching Florida. The UK has also felt this with freezing winds from Siberia being dubbed the ‘Beast From The East’ battering the entire country with the British Army deployed to help hundreds of stranded drivers on UK motorways.

Judah Cohen a climatologist has said of this extreme weather “Global warming is contributing to milder temperatures but is also having unforeseen consequences such as this winter which is a great example of what we can expect from climate change, it’s mind-boggling.”

Renewable energy is one of the most effective tools we have in the fight against climate change, and there is every reason to believe it will succeed. Solar energy has experienced remarkable growth and huge cost improvements over the past decade and shows no signs of slowing down. Prices are declining rapidly, and renewable energy is becoming increasingly competitive with fossil fuels all around the world.

With these weather conditions expected to become more frequent, it is now even more clear that we need to make the switch to renewable energy to reduce Co2 emissions and the consumption of fossil fuels to fight against these major climate changes.

Renewable energy is already helping address climate change however it’s time to push this forward to become the new normal, without doing so the ‘Beast From The East’ may become a more frequent unwanted visitor!
