London Mayor Boris Johnson has criticised the government’s proposal to cut the feed in tariff by over 80%. At Mayor’s Question Time with Green Party assembly member Jenny Jones, Boris Johnson stated that he is “very concerned” about the proposals and for the future of solar in the UK.
“I am concerned about the government’s potential cuts to the FIT”. He continues by adding “We are talking to members of all the representative bodies of solar industry in London.”
The Mayor believes that as many as 10,000 jobs could be at risk in London alone should the FIT cut go ahead.
“Solar panels have got cheaper, which is the government’s reason, I think, they are cutting the FIT…but I think it would be wrong if the cut actually stops people from investing in solar, because clearly it has many, many attractions”.
After a long debate with Jenny Jones, the London Mayor concluded with “We need to understand the implications…London has made progress and we can’t see it go backwards…I will stick up for London and its environment”.
